There’s a reason concrete is poured in silence. It’s heavy, messy, and requires patience to settle. The only sounds you hear are the tools of the builders, not the chatter of bystanders.
Relationships are no different.
When we are laying the foundation of love, it’s as if we are pouring concrete. The mixture of trust, respect, patience, and vulnerability is wet, fragile, and not yet ready to carry the weight of permanence. But too often, before it’s cured, we allow spectators to walk through our construction site.
Everyone wants to leave their handprint, their initials, their advice, their opinion pressed into the wet concrete of our beginnings. Some do it innocently. Some do it selfishly. And some do it carelessly… without realizing the cracks their imprint may cause years later.
This is why privacy matters.
This is why timing matters.
This is why “private until permanent” is more than a catchy phrase… it’s a practice of protection.
If you’ve ever watched a sidewalk being poured, you know how important it is for the builders to guard the space until it dries. They place cones around it. They rope it off. They take responsibility for the curing process, knowing that one misplaced step could compromise the entire slab.
The same discipline belongs in love.
Many of us have invited the wrong people into our relational foundations. We’ve let gossip set the pace. We’ve taken advice from people who’ve never built anything that lasted. We’ve confused familiarity with wisdom. And in the process, we’ve compromised the very concrete meant to hold the weight of our marriages, our families, and our futures.
But a strong foundation doesn’t just happen, it is guarded by the unit. It is trusted to the hands of builders who’ve already built well. It is nurtured by those who understand permanence. The goal should never be to prove to the world that we’re in love before our foundation is ready. The goal should be to build quietly, carefully, and faithfully until the ground we stand on is strong enough to endure a lifetime.
Because at the end of the day, we’re all responsible for ourselves, and that includes the foundations we build our marriages on.
Here’s a hard truth: many of us aren’t standing on our own foundations.
We’re standing on ground compromised by other people. It’s found in the advice we didn’t question. Opinions we didn’t filter. Gossip we allowed to seep into our conscience. Familiarity that tricked us into trusting voices that had no business at our building site.
So I must ask you:
Whose initials are secretly carved into your relationship’s foundation? Whose voice is echoing in the walls of your home, shaping the way you fight, forgive, or even love?
And deeper… do you have the courage to scrape out the old, flawed foundation and pour again if what you’ve built won’t last?
Privacy until permanence isn’t just about keeping outsiders out… it’s about keeping your love sacred enough to only let the right builders in.
If permanence is the goal, then protection is the process.
