The Reciprocal Principle
"Reciprocity doesn’t mean showing up in the same way. It means showing up with the same level of care and commitment." -Alex Elle
That’s the heart of the reciprocal principle: love, effort, and presence don’t always wear identical clothes, but they always carry the same weight when rooted in care.
Think about your relationships… romantic, platonic, or even professional. Too often, we measure reciprocity by replication: “If I did this, they should do that.” But reciprocity isn’t mimicry… It’s mutuality! It’s not about mirroring the exact same gestures, it’s about honoring the shared value underneath.
Some days, reciprocity looks like self-sacrifice. Other days, it looks like space. What matters isn’t that the actions are identical, but that they spring from the same soil of commitment to care.
This principle applies not just to how we show up for others, but to how we show up for ourselves. I’m continuously learning that self-care isn’t a fixed script. Some days it means pushing through the workout… other days it means laying down the weight and choosing rest as my rebellion. The action shifts, but the devotion to my own well-being remains the constant.
That’s reciprocity with the self… showing up differently as needed, but always with equal devotion.
This is why reciprocity is better understood through equity rather than equality. Equality assumes sameness… equity honors difference. When we ask for reciprocity, we’re not asking for a carbon copy. We’re asking for a shared standard of care. We’re saying: “Meet me in commitment, even if your expression looks nothing like mine.”
