The Toll on Higher Roads
The higher road looks glamorous from a distance. Supposedly elevated, noble, and untouched by the dust of petty arguments and shallow reactions. But those who take it know the truth in the higher road being expensive. Every step forward has a tollbooth and what you pay isn’t money… it’s pieces of your pride, your ego, and sometimes, your need to be right. The toll is real, it’s heavy, and in this realm it feels unfair. But each time you pay it, something holy takes root in you. Something that makes you softer, steadier, and strangely stronger.
Swallowing your pride is one of the steepest tolls you’ll encounter. There are moments when you know you’re right, but the cost of proving it would bankrupt the relationship. Sometimes the toll looks like apologizing, not because you’re wrong, but because the relationship is worth more than your point. You learn that humility is not humiliation. It’s the soil where transformation grows.
Grace is another toll. Grace requires removing yourself, your assumptions, your judgments, and your rebuttals… long enough to enter someone else’s world. To hold their humanity without crushing it. And in that moment, you become more than a person with opinions; you become a safe place for someone who has never known safety.
One of the hidden truths about the higher road is the one who’s most aware often carries the heaviest load. When you see what others can’t or won’t… you pay the toll they can’t afford. Maturity comes with invisible taxes. It looks like holding your tongue when you could crush someone with your words. It looks like offering mercy when silence would feel more satisfying… and mercy is costly. It can often feels like injustice or giving up ground. But over time, you realize mercy isn’t weakness… it’s mastery. It’s proof that you don’t need validation to know your value.
Honestly, the higher road isn’t free of potholes. You will be betrayed. You will be misunderstood. You will deal with people who treat your heart as if it doesn’t beat. And still, the toll is worth it! Because the reward isn’t in their response; it’s in who you’re becoming.
Each toll transforms you. Each restraint reflects something divine. And when holiness shines through your humanity, it’s not just your reflection anymore… it’s God’s as well. If it’s reflecting off of you, it’s because God has placed it in you. And what He’s placed in you is Himself, His holiness, His patience, and His mercy… holding and helping us all.
We’re all responsible for ourselves. And on the higher road, responsibility means paying the toll that makes us more whole.
